Cicadas in Wisconsin
There are almost 9 species of cicadas that call Wisconsin their home. Of them, the most common is the dog-day cicada, heatbug, or dog-day harvestfly. Warm summer afternoon airs are filled with the persistent hum of the cicadas. Their sounds can be deafening (over 100 decibels), with many males calling at once. They are active for a few weeks in late summer. Only a single 17-year brood occurs here, brood XIII.
