Cicadas in New Mexico
You can hear the loud buzzing sound of New Mexico cicadas on summer days. They are the mating calls of the males that have noise levels of 80-100 decibels – equivalent to a motorcycle or a lawnmower. The adults emerge from the ground when the temperature of the soil reaches 64oF. Then they mat and die in their short lifespan of a few weeks.
