Cicadas in Minnesota

No periodical cicadas are there in Minnesota. Only annual cicadas can be seen here each year near the end of summer. They are active from July through September. You can see them both in urban and rural areas wherever hardwood trees are present. Their high-pitched calls sound like a power line hum. The most common cicada species in the state is the big, late-season dog-day cicada (Neotibicen canicularis).
