Cicadas in California
The periodical cicadas are the more famous cicadas in California due to their loud, shrill sounds and sheer numbers. However, the state has several species of annual cicadas as well. At least 65 species of cicadas in 8 genera live in the state. They usually come out on warm, humid nights when it is not raining and call out to their mates.
