Cicadas in Arizona

Cicada season in Arizona are the hottest and driest days of summer before the monsoons reach the state. They prefer these climatic conditions, and June is their favorite month. The huge Southwestern giant floodplain cicada or grand Western Flood Plain Cicada found here is just a little bit smaller than the smallest North American hummingbird. The smallest cicada on the continent, Beameria venosa is also found here.

Arizona has around four dozen cicada species, and each has a different mating call. They can be found anywhere from deserts to higher altitudes. All cicadas of the state are annual (appearing every year) except the brood X cicadas, which are periodical (appear once in 13 or 17 years).
