Cicadas in Rhode Island
Periodical cicadas don’t occur in Rhode Island, but the annuals do. There are only a few cicada species living in the state. The males sing by vibrating a drum-like part of their abdomen. Their mating sounds can be as loud as 80-100 decibels! The females are silent in general. But they do make a faint clicking sound by flicking their wings.
